Lesson 3: Befriending Your Traffic

Yesterday, I outlined why trust is one of the single, most important factors that will make or break your sales.

Put simply:

People buy from people they trust.

(And they run away from those they don't.)

We all already know this….at least when it comes to doing business face to face,

Nobody wants to go near the sleazy car salesman, but everyone will buy from someone their best friend recommends.

Why, then, do we not treat our online traffic in the same way?

The sad truth is, when it comes to web traffic, most businesses just think about the numbers.

  • We wrote a blog post and got 8,462 pageviews.
  • We put up a lead magnet and got a 4.2% conversion rate.
  • We sent an email and has a 12.3% open rate.
  • At the end of the day 0.024% of users purchased.

(Are you seeing how the "traffic problem" actually plays out here???)

What we so often forget, is that those aren't just numbers in a spreadsheet.

They're not just "clicks" or "drop-offs."

They're real people, with real goals and needs, and real obstacles keeping them reaching those goals.

Your job is NOT to scream at them…it's to build trust.

Your job is to befriend them.

Friends look out for each other. They help each other. They talk about each other to other friends.

So, how do you befriend your traffic?

Basically, you have two options:

  1. You can take the time to build trust yourself.
  2. Other people can share their trust with you.

I'll explain the second point tomorrow (It's actually my favorite strategy).

But, for now, I want you to take a hard look at your business. Think about your sales funnels, your copy, your giveaways, your calls to action…everything that touches a user on their journey.

Then, for each one, I want you to ask yourself a simple question:

Would I say this to a friend???

If not, you've got your work cut out for you…

(But don't worry, we'll help you figure it out.)
