What's one belief you have that lots of people disagree with?

Here's mine:

It's lazy to expect Facebook and Instagram to bring you new clients.

That's what I call "Slot Machine Thinking."

Do people occasionally make money at the slots?

Yes. But rarely.

There's a reason the biggest buildings in Vegas are casinos and not the gambling addicts' houses.

Fun fact: When we onboard new coaching clients, 92% report having lost money on Facebook ads and content in the last 3 months.

92%!!!

The takeaway: Stop treating your marketing like a trip to the casino.

  • You will rarely win
  • You will often lose money
  • Facebook and Instagram will get richer at your expense

What do you do instead?

This week, I've been showing you my favorite alternative—partnership marketing.

But at the end of the day, I can see why you could think I might be biased. :)

That's why I always make a point to ask a simple question to other entrepreneurs who are using partnerships to attract customers:

"What appeals to you about using partnerships versus other marketing strategies like Facebook ads, SEO, etc.?"

Today, I want to share 5 responses from 5 very different business owners, so you can see why so many people are switching to a far simpler method for growing their business.

Example #1 — Dustin Riechmann, FireCreek Snacks (eCommerce):

"There's so much goodwill that's built in a partnership, especially a podcast. That format, that long form format, you get on there for 30 minutes or an hour and the spotlight's on you. And people really grow to know, like, and trust you almost immediately."

"We've done paid ads, we've done some content and things like that, and it's OK. It's a really slow burn and it's expensive. I think I like partnerships because so far they've basically all been free. And there's this potential for really outsized gains."

Example #2 — Shannon Mattern (Courses, Digital Products):

"I tried all the other things. Pinterest, SEO, Instagram, webinars, Facebook ads, and just endless content creation. It's a hustle, and it's a grind...and it's just so much work. Not to say that all those seeds you plant along the way don't eventually bear fruit, but it's not nearly as quick as a partnership."

"It's more fulfilling, more rewarding, takes way less time, makes a lot more money."

Example #3 — Nick True, Mapped Out Money (Personal Finance Coaching):

"It puts me in a place where I can play in the world that I'm good at. I can just lean on what I naturally already want to do anyway, which is build relationships with people. The other thing that's really nice about it is all the obvious stuff. Now, I don't have to generate the leads."

Example #4 — Austin Church, Freelance Cake (Online Course, Coaching):

"I love teaching what I know. I love helping other people succeed. So to just show up and teach on subjects I'm passionate about is kind of a no-brainer."

Image

"They're free for the most part. They're infinitely scalable. There's always another audience that you could teach...I think for folks who are like, 'Man, I'm not seeing the growth that I want,' it may be because you're too dependent on Google's algorithm. You're too dependent on your return on ad spend. Get a little more creative. And honestly, [partnerships] are just fun."

Example #5 — Chaitra Radhakrishna, Pinkpot Studio (Shopify Consulting, Online Courses):

"It's quicker. It brings results faster...Partnerships take less time up front when compared to other things, like building up SEO by writing blog posts or growing a social media following…"

"Also, they build trust. For example, when I do a partnership with a business owner, all of her audience trusts her already. So when I'm with her they are more likely to trust me than if they randomly find me on Instagram. So I feel like building trust and quickly building an audience—partnerships are great for that."
