Ever had a referral for a product or service you sell?

It's freaking magical. By far the easiest sale you'll ever make. You barely have to "sell" at all when your business comes recommended by a trusted source.

At a high level, it's easy to see why:

  1. Susie already knows, likes, and trusts your customer Bob
  2. Bob tells Susie she should buy your product or service
  3. Susie's trust in Bob instantly gets transferred to you

The only problem with referrals?

It's tough to scale them. Or to even get them at all if you're just starting out. That's why most biz owners end up sitting on their hands and hoping for whatever referrals they can get. 

But if you're looking at referrals that way, you are overlooking a massive opportunity to generate high-quality leads whenever you need them.

Because at the end of the day there's nothing magical about referrals themselves. The real magic is in that transfer of trust happening underneath the surface.

And guess what? Referrals aren't the only way people can transfer trust to your business.

Example:

Jacob Ratliff is a marketing coach and consultant who owns a business called Asheville Marketer.

Referrals were a helpful way to get initial traction, but he was sick of depending on something so unpredictable for growth. 

So instead of relying on customers to transfer trust to his business, we showed him how to harness trust from other people's audiences. Here's what I mean:

  • He identified several influencers in the marketing space who had podcasts his ideal clients were likely to listen to 
     
  • We showed him how to pitch them on interviewing him on their podcasts
     
  • Several said yes, including Chris Guillebeau at Side Hustle School
     
  • This gave Jacob and his business instant credibility in front of 1000s of his ideal customers
     
  • He sold $20k in coaching services as a result

When Chris Guillebeau featured Jacob to his large audience, he instantly transferred the TRUST his audience has in him onto Jacob.

This meant that Jacob was not only able to generate traffic and leads from his podcast appearances...it meant all of those leads were people who now already trust him, too.

Which makes converting them into clients 10x easier than if he'd met them by shoving an ad in their face on Facebook.

Her Partnership: Online Workshop — Shannon asked Kayse Morris of The CEO Teacher Academy if she could teach her audience how to build websites on WordPress for their businesses. 

This was a big need for Kayse's audience that she wasn't currently addressing. So she invited Shannon to teach a series of workshops via Facebook Live that they called The Teacher Blog Blast Off:

  • $6,000 in sales
